What Ceiling Stains Mean for Your Roof

All too often, homeowners ignore stains on their ceilings. Since they don’t see water hitting the floor, they think it’s just a blemish and it’s no big deal. Unfortunately, that’s not usually the case. An abnormal stain on your ceiling can mean a number of things, and almost all of them are signs that you have an issue that could require roof replacement.

In some cases, the markings can come from animals living in your attic or roofing vents. If you don’t think that means you have a roofing problem, you aren’t paying attention. In order to move into your home, animals have to find an easy passage, and that can often be through broken sections of roof. Stains caused by unwelcome guests are usually accompanied by unwelcome smells, and further roof damage might be on the way.

Perhaps the most common cause is moisture building up above your ceiling, and too much moisture is a good sign that you need roof replacement. Whether it’s because of a missing shingle or a roof that isn’t properly ventilated, excessive moisture can do a lot of damage. If you notice a stain on the ceiling, it’s definitely worth getting on the ladder and seeing if the roof above that area is in bad shape. If so, you need to get to work correcting the problem.

Stains can also be caused by other appliances that are acting up. An AC unit or a satellite dish with faulty wiring could be culprit. In this case you might be able to fix the problem quickly, and you should definitely make sure you don’t put it off. It’s a good idea to let a professional contractor inspect the area before you take action.

A stain on your ceiling is never a good sign, so don’t ignore this problem when it arises. The more quickly you act, the better your chances of avoiding large-scale damage and a full roof replacement.
