EPDM Roofing Has Staying Power

img12EPDM roofing is not something new, it has been around for about 40 years. EPDM is an acronym for ethylene propylene diene terpolymer, a super durable type of smooth rubber roofing sheet that is adhered onto low angle and flat roofing. Other ways this roofing has been utilized is in pond liners, roof top gardens, foundations, and on top of recreational vehicles.

This roofing has proven its durability by taking a beating from weathering out in the elements. It has proven resistant to hail, ozone, ultraviolet radiation, and abrasion. EPDM has demonstrated both flexibility in low temperature environments as well as exceptional resistance to extreme heat and fire. It even withstands the differential expansion of thermal shock.

Original installations from over 40 years ago are still protecting roofs today. The estimated lifespan of EPDM roofing is 50 years, and it can be installed in temperatures down to 20 degrees below zero. There are no maintenance recommendations for this style of roof other than periodic inspection and the removal of excess debris off the roof surface. The roof membrane does not pollute water runoff from the roof.

Choosing a style option of EPDM largely depends on the benefits you want to get from the roof. If you are in an arid or desert climate, the white membrane would be a good choice. The white color will deflect ultraviolet rays. This style is coated with titanium dioxide to further protect the ultraviolet rays from attacking the polymer. Conversely, the black membrane would be a good choice if you are concerned about retaining heat in your building during a cold winter. Carbon black is added to the polymer to further convert ultraviolet rays into heat.

The installed cost per square foot for this roofing type is between four and six dollars per square foot. This does not take into account additional costs such as removal of previous roofing material. Look to EPDM roofing to give you a value added roofing system with longevity.
