Did Your Roof Survive The Winter?

Damaged Roof ShinglesOnce the snow has melted and spring begins to settle in it’s time to start thinking about what’s on your spring home maintenance list. One of the first projects should be to have a roof inspection. After a long winter the snow and ice could have caused damage to the shingles on your roof and depending on when you catch the damage, it could mean either a simple shingle repair or an entire replacement.

To avoid any additional damage, make sure you have not lost any shingles. If you catch the damage early, it is possible that you’ll just need a few shingles replaced. Replacing damaged shingles will often extend the life of your roof for several more years. Another area that should be inspected is your attic to make sure there is no leakage coming down into the home. If leaks go undetected, you run the danger of having mold and rot ruin your home. Sometimes you will find that the wet spots are not right underneath the damaged shingle, as water can travel down to a lower area and enter the roof in a different spot.

Another spot to inspect are the areas around any pipes or vents on the roof to make sure there are no loose materials around them. Additionally, all gutters and downspouts should be attached securely and free of debris that could cause draining water to backup. If your gutters are clogged, ice can form during cold spring nights and back up right underneath the shingles of your roof system causing damage such as dry rot.

Once the snow and ice are completely gone, you have your roof inspected to make sure your shingles are still pliable and laying down flat. Shingles that crack or crumble will need to be repaired or replaced, which is where we come in. At Elite Roofing we can easily replace and repair any damaged, cracked or missing shingles. We can make sure you get replacements that are closely matched to your existing shingles and we’ll also inspect the health of your roof system to make sure there’s no serious damage.
